Course Details

Dear Students,

We hope everyone is getting prepared for the Congen 2009 course.

Attached you will find the following information:

  • Brief course schedule as it stands today
  • List of the faculty, their institutions, and websites for additional info. You might look at their recent publications and research interests
  • A KLM file that you can load into Google Earth (http://earth.google.com/) and see the course site and location of various field trips in Panama.

Please check the map on the web as it will be updated periodically.

We hope to have introduction PDF's selected by the faculty for your reading shortly. Because of size, these will be downloadable from the course site.

Additional info and comments:

  • Please make sure you have your passport and visa as needed.
  • Please make sure you have all vaccines that maybe be required from your country to enter Panama.
  • Please bring any of your own data that you might want to work with during the course. The course is an excellent opportunity to get advice and make progress on analyzing that data set that you have been trying to make something of.
  • Housing Bed Linens are provided so no worries. The housing is nice, but not luxurious.
  • Please bring sunscreen, hiking shoes/boots and hiking appropriate clothing (long pants is recommended for hiking). A hat is recommended.
  • Binoculars? Sunglasses?
  • A bathing suit is also recommended along with mask and snorkel.
  • Panama will be in its "dry" season...the weather should be warm and sunny and ONLY 60% humidity!
  • All students flying in to Panama will be picked up at the airport via a large 15 passenger van. However, more than one student may be arriving at a time and so please don't bring 5 large suitcases.
  • Laptop computers will be provided for all the course work and programs. Upon arrival you will be assigned your computer. If you want, you are welcome to bring your own computer. Internet access (wireless and wired) will be available. However, the course computers will already come pre-installed with most of the software and information that you will need.
  • You will leave the course with a binder full of notes and lectures and instructions. You will also have a DVD full of notes, lectures, PDFs and course information...whatever you may want to copy before you leave. We will provide blank DVDs for your use.

We work and play very hard during this course...enjoy and come expecting a lot of class time. Also come expecting to develop close ties to many different researchers from around the world.
