Biography:

Dr. Smith obtained his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Biology of the Johns Hopkins University working in the field of population genetics in 1989 and completed post-doctoral training in molecular evolution at the University of California, San Diego in 1991. Subsequently, he joined the Salk Institute for Biological Studies where he became the Assistant Director of the Human Genome Center that focused on human chromosome 11. While at the Salk Institute he developed genomic sequence sampling (now a division of Genbank) . Dr. Smith has worked for the operational and technical support contractor (currently SAIC-Frederick ) at the National Cancer Institute at Frederick since 1994 on HIV-1/AIDS host genetics, a novel gene identification technique (Mapping by Admixture Linkage Disequilibrium), using genes as biomarkers in epidemiological studies of syringe sharing behavior and on other research topics.

Research:

MALD - is a theoretically powerful, but as yet unproven approach to association gene mapping that tracks long range haplotypes generated by gene flow among recently admixed ethnic groups such as African Americans and Hispanics. (Read more…which will be linked to a page with more details)
