New Trash & Recycling Procedures for NCI-Frederick June 2011

  • Starting July 1st, 2011, NCI-Frederick will use a new trash and recycling contractor and there will be several important changes in how laboratory, shop and office personnel will handle recyclables.
  • Medical / biohazardous waste procedures (for animal tissues and carcasses, autoclave waste, sharps and lab waste such as gloves, pipettes, glassware and such) will not change.
  • Small changes in trash pickups should be transparent to almost all staff.
  • As a general rule, problems or issues with trash or recycling collection within buildings should be resolved through the FME Service Shop at x 1081. Issues or problems with the recycling or trash dumpsters service should be resolved through the EHS Waste Management group at x5718

  • Recycling Procedures

  • The FME Service Worker shop will set out recycling bins at several locations within each building: lunchrooms, mailrooms, copier areas and hallways and will empty them twice a week. Lab, shop and administrative staff must bring their recyclables to these bins for collection.

  • The following materials may be recycled:
    1. Paper, including office paper, newspaper, magazines, journals, junk mail, cardstock, non-refrigerator packaging such as milk or juice boxes, brown paper bags and books. Also, shredded paper must be bagged;
    2. Plastics bottles boxes and containers with recycling codes #1 through #7, including pipette tip boxes, but NOT including chemical bottles that have any residue whatsoever. Plastic lunch containers such as yogurt tubs or salad clamshells MUST be clean before recycling;
    3. Glass bottles and containers, including clear and colored glass, but NOT including chemical bottles that have any residue whatsoever and NOT plate glass;
    4. Metal cans, pans, foils, wire including lunchroom and lab cans, but NOT including any chemical containers that have any residue whatsoever;
    5. Cardboard, including corrugated and paperboard, such as cereal boxes.

  • The following items can NOT be recycled in these bins:
    1. Food or food contaminated items;
    2. Chemical or reagent bottles that have any residue;
    3. Computer or electronic equipment (also called e-waste);
    4. Styrofoam;
    5. Used paper towels, soiled paper plates or cups;
    6. Laminated paper;
    7. Wax paper;
    8. Plastic cutlery (knives, forks, spoons)
    9. Aerosol cans;
    10. Wood;
    11. Ceramics
  • NCI-Frederick programs can no longer send paper to the USAG Recycling Center for bulk shredding. Programs must make their own arrangements to shred any documents they consider sensitive.

  • EHS Waste Management will continue to collect batteries, ink and toner cartridges, Tyvek suits, aerosol cans, empty chemical containers and fluorescent light tubes for recycling. Please e-mail ncichemwaste@mail.nih.gov or call x 5718 to schedule a pickup.

  • Please be thoughtful about empty chemical containers. If they contain any residue, even if that residue is considered harmless, please contact EHS Waste Management by e-mail ncichemwaste@mail.nih.gov or call x 5718 to schedule a pickup. If the container is clean, such as empty, dry solvent jugs, they may be recycled in the nearest recycling bin.

  • Please contact EHS Waste Management by e-mail ncichemwaste@mail.nih.gov or call x 5718 for pickup of any aerosol cans – empty or full.

  • Larger metal objects, such as furniture, equipment or scrap steel must be recycled separately. Please contact the FME Service Shop x1081 to arrange collection of these items.

  • For office or lab moves, cleanouts or for large volumes of papers or journals, please contact the FME Service Shop x1081 for assistance.

  • If the recycling bins are overflowing or you cannot locate any recycling bin, please contact FME Service Worker shop at x1081

  • Occupants of 244, 310, 425, 431, 550, 562 and 1052 will only find recycling bins on the first floor, since there are no elevators. Please walk you recyclables down to the bins on the first floor.

  • We are looking at outlets to recycle wood pallets and compost landscaping brush and the like, but these items cannot be recycled, currently.

  • Thank you for your time.
