Virus-like particles assembled in the test tube from HIV-1 Gag protein that had been produced in E. coli. The assembly takes place in a fully defined system. These results show that the structure of the protein enables it to assemble into organized structures in the absence of any other proteins; the system offers the possibility of detailed analysis of the assembly process.
